Our DIY Small Nursery Makeover

Our DIY Small Nursery Makeover

Shortly after we found out we were expecting I started hunting on Pinterest and dreaming up ideas for our baby’s nursery.  We had a very small space to work with – just a little larger than 8×9 so i knew space would be an issue.  First thing to go was the old carpet!  I wanted our little one to have nice new laminate flooring with a soft cream colored rug!  My hubby Mark was a super builder putting together the nursery furniture and he even installed the new flooring himself!  In the meantime I started buying frames from Homesense and Ikea and slowly put my vision into action!

Picking the Paint color was not an easy task.  I think I brought home about 20 different swatch samples and had them all taped to our wall… I finally decided and went with “Gentle Cream” from Benjamin Moore.  I love Benjamin Moore paint and for our nursery we chose their “Zero VOC” paint called Natura! My hubby Mark was the master painter, and my pregnant self continuously checked the walls for any missed spots!

I knew I wanted a mostly white nursery with a grey theme, however during the planning process, I eliminated most Grey elements and decided on Beige/Gold accents instead.  The flooring was a darker rustic color called “Tofino” and we finally found a Crib and Dresser small enough to fit our small nursery on Amazon!  Soon some Animals were also added – our little one would be waking up to elephants and monkeys and lions – all in soft and muted colors!

The book shelf  idea was inspired by searching on Pinterest.  The shelves were bought at IKEA and once finally leveled were filled with special books and framed gold prints!  Underneath we now have a basket of books that are in constant rotation as our little one loves being read to before bedtime.

Roller Shades and Blackout curtains were a must to keep the nursery dark during nap time!  We found these white linen curtains at Pottery Barn Kids, along with the rug!  The framed baby animal prints are from Indigo.ca and they are carefully secured with double sided Velcro so we could safely display them above the crib!

I had so much fun planning and decorating our little bundle’s nursery!  The theme changed a few times but we ended up with a neutral white and beige nursery with gold and black elements!  It was perfect!  By far the biggest splurge was the Joya Rocker in gorgeous white leather from Monte Design!  Again, one of the only rocking chairs that we could comfortably fit in our small nursery!  Any questions? I’d love to hear your comments below!

  • Usually I prefer more colour in a kid’s room. But the colours you have selected are brilliant especially for such a small place where a lot of colour would be tiring for the eyes. I agree with not wanting gray at the end, beige needs something warmer to go along with.
    Are the velcros trustworthy??
The fact that the room is so small makes it even cuter and cozy!
