Our 10 Favorite Books for Baby’s First Library

With SO MANY different reads out there, it’s an overwhelming task choosing the books for Baby’s First Library.  However in our case (with a tiny nursery and small apartment) less is definitely more!

Books are so important, but small babies don’t need a lot of books in their library at first.  I was told that 10-12 quality board books are the best to start out with and you can grow your collection from there.  Hudson’s library has grown quite a bit, however these ones have been his favorites and our go-to reads during his first 6 months!

Our 10 Favorite Books for Baby’s First Library

1.Goodnight Moon – by Margaret Wise Brown:In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. “Goodnight room, goodnight moon.” And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room, the little bunny says goodnight.  This is a classic that we read before bedtime almost every single night.

2. Little Blue Truck – by Alice Schertle:Beep! Beep! Beep! Meet Blue. A muddy country road is no match for this little pick up- that is, until he gets stuck while pushing a dump truck out of the mud. Luckily, Blue has made a pack of farm animal friends along his route. And they’re willing to whatever it takes to get their lil pal back on the road.  This book tells the story of friendship and helping others!

3. I Know a Monkey by Louise Tate: This gorgeous hardback book stars one very special fellow indeed! From stacked-up hats to balancing goats, this monkey’s setting a trend of his own. Story-time is a barrel of fun with this quirky, chirpy monkey.

4. Clifford Shares by Norman Bridwell: Learning to share with the Big Red Dog! Clifford loves to share his water with the birds, his bench with the girl, his ball with his friend – and everyone loves to share with Clifford! This is our go-to when we need to get Hudson down for a nap ASAP and don’t have the time for a longer story-time. This colorful book is short and sweet!

5. Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: This classic and beautifully illustrated book encourages young children to interact with the picture to find the next fairy tale and nursery rhyme character.  We especially love how each page has a familiar rhyme.

6. If I were a puppy… by Anne Wilkinson:  This cute series book has beautiful illustrations and fun “feel-y” panels to spark baby’s imaginations. We love the cheeky soft black tail attached to this book!

7. I Have to Go by Robert Munsch: This is an ever-popular story written by children’s author Robert Munsch.  One of my favorite authors as a child, I hope to add many more of his books to Hudson’s library. They are wonderfully illustrated and super fun to read!

8. Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney: Llama, Llama red pajama waiting, waiting for his mama. Mama isn’t coming yet, Baby Llama starts to fret. In this infectious rhyming read-aloud, Baby Llama turns bedtime into an all-out llama drama! In the end everything is okay as mama Llama returns to set things right.

9. Your Baby’s first word will be DADA by Jimmy Fallon: One of the most famous entertainers in the world – Jimmy Fallon’s popular book is definitely one of Hudson’s Daddy’s favorites!  Not that I don’t enjoy reading it… but I can’t flip the pages fast enough… as there is literally one word on each page!  I usually add-lib by naming the different animals.

10. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: A favorite of adults and children alike, its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week becoming a butterfly by the end.  Hudson has the caterpillar that he likes to play with (or chew on!) as we read this favorite book.

I’m not sure who’s hungrier? The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Baby Hudson!?
