How to create a grid-style gallery wall of family photos!

Lately I’ve been making an effort to actually do something with my photos, and not just let them live in my phone and camera.  In our family room we originally had some landscape photos (taken on our travels) that i had printed onto canvas.  These had been up for a while and I was bored… Seeing so many Pinterest posts with lovely grid style portrait galleries, I decided to create one myself.  We had a large white wall to fill and I decided to go with black and white photos and white frames to keep it neutral.  Right now I’m experimenting with grey and green accents, but I wanted to be able to change it up and have the gallery still look good!

I had the 12 x 12 photos printed at Costco and they only cost $5.99 each!black and white photos 12 x 12The Frames are from IKEA and they are called RIBBA.  They come in black or white.  These frames also allow you to put the matting and photo at the front or have them set back, creating more of that photo box look.ikea frames RIBBA gallery wallOnce I had the frames on the wall (with the help of my hubby, a level, and simple wall hanging equipment), I laid out my photos.  We hung the frames less than an inch apart.  I wanted them close together and centered above the couch.choosing photos for wall gallery in family roomThese white RIBBA frames cost $19.99 each from IKEA.  We bought 8, so about $160 +tax. These frames are currently not available – but I’ve linked very similar ones HERE.

These 16 x 16 frames are perfect for photos printed 12 x 12. They come in a 3 pack for about $50

Most of the photos we chose are from our most recent vacation in Australia.  I wanted to choose family photos that are natural and un-posed which also had a bit of a tropical/summer vibe to them.  The nice thing is we can always change up the photos and introduce new ones as time passes! How to DIY Gallery Wall with family portraits
Now to make sure they are all lined up correctly and none of the frames are crooked.  It was a bit tricky making sure each one was evenly spaced.Inexpensive grid gallery wall for family room
It feels so good to be finished. I love that we have a gallery of some of our favorite family portraits in the room where we spend a lot of our time.  The entire DIY project cost about $250beautiful gallery wall of family photosCreating a Gallery Wall in a space that is otherwise empty (or being taken up by something mediocre) was actually pretty easy. I think its safe to say the gallery wall trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.  What do you guys think?
