Why I Switched to Safer Makeup with Beautycounter

Why I Switched to Safer Makeup with Beautycounter

When we think of “Spring Cleaning” we usually think of the home.  Cleaning out old cabinets and dusting those hard to reach corners of the house. This year I decided to Spring Clean my makeup drawer and “Switch to Safer” while doing so!  I’ve learned the scary truth about what’s in most makeup on the market and what’s EVEN scarier is there’s a good chance you’re unknowingly putting these scary ingredients on your face every morning.

Clearly, I’m a huge fan of Beautycounter as a brand and everything they stand for to get safer products in the hands of everyone, but do their products perform?  I have to say I was a skeptic at first, as most natural or mineral makeup I’ve tried in the past I was less than enthused about.  Beautycounter is definitely different, I absolutely LOVE each one of these products included in the Flawless in Five and I’ll be continuing to use them. Yes, they are a little more expensive than most products at your local drug store, but they are SAFE to use on yourself and your children and are more concentrated – so a little goes a long way!

Here’s hoping one day we won’t need to worry so much about the ingredients hiding in our beauty products and skincare.

Remember these facts:

Just because a product is labeled “hypoallergenic” or “natural,” doesn’t mean it’s safe.

There’s no legal definition of the word ‘natural’ – unfortunatelyit’s just a marketing tactic.

“Organic” may only refer to the ingredients that are certified organic, not the entire product itself.

Always avoid products that contain fragrance.

One simple word can hide dozens of toxic ingredients.

There are many ingredients allowed in beauty and skin care products that Beautycounter believes should never be used. Harsh sulfates, formaldehyde-releasers, artificial fragrances, PEGs, mineral oil, and carbon black to name just a few! Many of these are human carcinogens, hormone disrupters and skin irritants. With Beautycounter you can feel good knowing that each ingredient is tested (never on animals) and is safe for everyday use!

Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation

This foundation has been game-changing for me! Tint Skin is a lightweight, creamy foundation that cares for your skin. Its easy-to-blend formula contains sodium hyaluronate, a natural moisture magnet, to promote even skin tone and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike so many I’ve tried in the past that felt cakey or oily throughout the day, this one has great coverage, is moisturizing, and stays in place all day long! I’m using the Tint Skin in the “SAND” color and it’s perfect!

Touch-up Concealer Pen

This Concealer is Magic! It hides the darkest (I was up all night with my baby) circles! Formulated with knotgrass extract, this long-lasting concealer helps reduce the appearance of fine lines as it hides dark circles, redness, and blemishes. Its click-pen and brush applicator make it easy to apply just the right amount, even on the go. I’m using the concealer pen in “LIGHT”.

Color Define Brow Pencil

I chose the Medium color and it’s been great. It glides on smooth and looks natural and full. Now I feel confident with my brows on point without compromising my health.  Brow pencils and Eye Liners are notorius for hiding harmful ingredients like talc, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), urea, sulfates, lead (sometimes in products called Kohl), and phthalates.

Beautycounter Volume Mascara

Carbon black, a pigment used in mascaras to create the deep black color, has been linked to a range of adverse health effects. Mascara shouldn’t be that scary! Beautycounter Mascaras are pigmented with naturally-occurring iron oxides. I LOVE the Volume mascara and it’s easy to apply.  You can layer it and add extra definition by sweeping it side to side! Unlike a lot of other brands, there is no clumping or smudging, and its formulated with cleaner, plant-derived ingredients that replace harmful emollients often used. I haven’t tried the lenghtneing formula yet, but I’m loving the volume!

Powder Blush Duo

This two tone blush by Beautycounter is beautiful and I can’t wait to try their cream blusher this summer! I chose “Bloom Tulip” for my Flawless in Five  and it gives me just the perfect amount of cheek color.  Made with moisturizing and antioxidant-rich porcelain flower extract, each satiny powder blends seamlessly to give a natural look.

Lip Gloss

This gloss goes everywhere with me and I can’t wait to purchase it in more colors!  I chose “PEONY” and I am so impressed with the long lasting shine and moisturizing feel on my lips.  There are SO MANY Lipsticks and lip glosses out there that contain lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum, and other toxic metals.  It’s said we unknowingly eat ONE POUND of lipstick a year, make sure its good for you!

I haven’t thrown out all my old makeup yet, but I am slowly replacing it, and from now on I will NOT buy products that contain potentially harmful ingredients.  I think Beautycounter is a true testament that you can have beautiful, luxurious makeup without compromising on safety.
