How to create a DIY Cake Smash / First Birthday Photoshoot at HOME

With “Stay Home” regulations during this time, I knew that I had to get creative for Grace’s First Birthday! I originally thought I would have her photos done professionally, but instead I photographed her myself and I’m so pleased with how they turned out. Here’s how I did it… READ ON!

I ordered this inexpensive photography backdrop and white sheet off Amazon. It shipped in just a couple days and it was actually very easy to put together! It came with a storage bag for storage and clamps to keep the white backdrop in place!

Our cakes were made by Cakes by Anjan! They turned out so great and were delicious! (Rasberry White Chocolate under layers of Buttercream). It’s important to keep the cakes cold for the photoshoot. I took them out of the fridge at the very last minute. That way if they got poked, they weren’t damaged too much. More tips for keeping the cake together longer below!

I used cheerios to keep Grace busy while exploring her cake. I placed them on top of the cake and then I was able to snap away while she constantly grabbed for more. Once the cake started to warm to room temperature, I swapped it for the second cake from the fridge. I also ordered two in case one got destroyed and we wanted to enjoy and share the other one!

The balloons and decorations were from Kiddo Parties and we chose the “Pretty in Pink” theme. I highly recommend using an electric balloon pump! This saved me so much time, and I was able to create the balloon garland and put up the tassels in no time!

Make sure you have a well lit room with plenty of natural light. Look for a place in your home that has big windows allowing the light in. I took these photos in my front office with the blinds pulled fully open. I also photographed Grace in the morning, before she needed her nap. We then let her enjoy the cake while we sang happy birthday after lunch!

Before you get started make sure you have everything set up and ready to go. I had her outfits laying on the table next to me, my camera was charged, and any accessories I planned to use (balloons, flowers, birthday hat…) they were all within arms reach.

Remember to keep it fun and enjoy the moment! If you have a helper or assistant then that’s a bonus for sure!
