Choosing A Newborn Baby Photographer!

Choosing A Newborn Baby Photographer!
Choosing a Newborn Baby Photographer can be overwhelming to say the least. Photographers with this special skill are growing in numbers, so there’s often a lot of them to choose from. It’s a very special experience, so you want to do your research first and make sure it’s pleasant for everyone. Newborn photos will create memories that last a lifetime! With both Hudson and Grace we were ‘over the moon’ with how they turned out! If in the Vancouver area, I definitely recommend Emily Leeman Photography. I’m completely in awe of how she has perfectly captured both our little ones!
Having newborn photos taken is a Once in a Lifetime Experience for your little bundle of joy. I’ve had friends who’ve unfortunately had a bad experience with their photographer, and once they’ve realized their photos “aren’t very good”, its too late to truly capture the “newness”. Newborn babies are ideally photographed between 1-3 weeks old.

When choosing a newborn photographer, it’s important to ask about their experience including how many newborns they have photographed. You can usually tell their level of experience by their posing. You want to see that newborn expressions are not strained, and that their hands and feet look comfortable. I love that fact that Emily specializes in Newborn Photography and has her own studio full of beautiful props and accessories!

It’s also important to ask your newborn photographer whether they have taken any newborn photography workshops. These workshops usually teach important information about newborn safety. Newborn babies are quite top heavy (their heads making up 25% + of their weight), so it’s important they know how to work with them. If you see images on Pinterest or a photographer’s website that look questionable when it comes to safety… ask how they were done. Many are composites and a professional newborn photographer will gladly put your mind at ease.

We absolutely loved the family shots that Emily was able to capture. It’s difficult to get the entire family looking their best and not appearing awkward. Emily was so patient and let us take our time, using a ladder to capture us from above, with the correct angle.

Because newborn photos are best captured when baby is fast asleep, I was given time during the session to feed Grace and take a break when needed. Emily keeps the temperature nice and warm in her studio, and has a sound machine (white noise) running which helped baby Grace stay nice and sleepy during the shoot. While she was working with our babe, we were able to relax on the comfy chairs provided inside the studio.

Capturing a few photos of Hudson and Grace together was very important to me. When you are bringing a sibling to your newborn photo shoot, be sure to dress them in soft colours without any logos or bold designs. I was so happy with how our sibling photos turned out! Hudson wasn’t exactly posing next to Grace, at this stage he actually wanted to run away from her. Emily ended up photographing them separately and then used her professional editing skills to merge the two together. (But you would never know!) ; ) It’s magic indeed!
I would recommend having newborn photos done every single time. They are so special and can be treasured for a lifetime. We used ours for our announcement card and printed out extra copies for the grandparents. I plan to have both my favourites of Hudson and Grace blown up and framed for our stairwell. Thanks to Emily Leeman Photography for the best experience two times in a row! You truly are a “baby whisperer”.
